Proper Food Combining
One thing human beings do that other animals in nature don’t do is to put a large variety of different types of foods in their stomach at one time. We really don’t know any better because this is what most of us have learned from birth. It is “normal” to have a salad followed by a meal of meat, potatoes, a cooked vegetable, a drink and a dessert. This all goes into one big pot and is stirred up to produce quite a disturbance in the digestive system. If you read about the practice of “food combining” you will discover that our bodies produce both an alkaline and an acid digestive juice according to which type of food it receives. If you eat starches your body requires and alkaline digestive juice. If you eat meat or condensed protein your body requires an acid digestive juice. Unfortunately these juices when mixed together neutralize each other. This is why it is not a good idea to mix proteins and starches. By following simple food combining principals you will have much more energy and feel better. When I speak of proteins I am referring to meats, poultry, fish, cheese, nuts, nut butters, soy proteins and anything that is considered to be a concentrated source of protein. Starches are your potatoes, rice, grains, pasta, and breads. It is common in our society to mix meat and potatoes, fish and rice, bread and cheese, peanut butter and toast and so on. These are very poor combinations and fight in your digestive system. If you want to be friendly to your body start paying attention to proper food combining principals. This is a perfect opportunity to begin incorporating raw food into your diet. Although it is best to eat fruit alone and never following a meal, you can eat raw salads and even lightly steamed veggies with either meats or with starches. So instead of having rice and fish you will want to have rice and a large mixed vegetable salad, or fish and a large vegetable salad. You can ad a steamed vegetable to these combinations but try to really watch combining fruits, proteins and starches. My motto for excellent health and wellness is: The more raw food the better!
