Did You Keep Last Years Resolution To Lose Weight? As we are going deeper into winter we also go deeper into ourselves. It is a time to contemplate where we are in our lives and what changes need to be made. The New Years Resolution is a popular way to commit to a “new beginning” and for the weight loss industry; it is the busiest time of year. What I have found in my years of working in this industry is people actually start gearing up for January during the Holidays. Yet the Holidays are the most destructive time for those trying to watch their weight. It is a time when the temptations are greater than any other time of year. With the temptations comes the guilt. By the first of January the guilt is exchanged for a new commitment to controlling ones weight and the hopes of losing all those extra pounds gained during the holiday season and during the past year. Most well meaning “dieters”, begin the first of January and by March they are back to their previous eating habits. They might attempt another diet again in the spring, however; a few months later the old habits creep back once again. How do you actually change your habits once and for all? First of all, you will need to make a solid commitment to changing your behavior. Second, you will need to discover what prevents you from keeping your commitment. Is it lack of results? Is it discouragement? Frustration? Lack of will power? Addiction? Emotional issues? Once you discover what is stopping you, then you can go about confronting those issues and getting beyond them. Most people who have been caught up in the “dieters” mentality believe if they can find the “willpower” to control their urges to eat unhealthily or to over eat, they will be successful. But there is much more to it than willpower. The issues that prevent you from being successful in achieving and maintaining your goal are stronger than your will. These are deep seated subconscious issues that most people are not consciously aware of. You may be eating to keep those unconscious issues buried beneath the surface of your awareness. To overcome your issues is to identify them, to uncover them and then find healthier ways of dealing with them. If food and eating is your “drug of choice” then you may need to get help and support to uncover the reasons you are using food to medicate yourself. This year, rather than making a New Years Resolution to lose weight, you may want to make a resolution to get the help and support you need to make permanent changes in your behavior. Weight Loss will be the natural result of dealing effectively with your issues.
